Vol. 27 No. 2 March 19, 2010Record Field of 246 Dancers Facing Record Number of Upsets
One day of play, 16 games, 7 upsets – that’s why they call it March Madness.
An exhilarating first day of the Big Dance delivered on all that makes this tourney great – three overtime games, one #10, two #11s, a #13 and a #14 all advancing and ‘Nova nearly taken out by Robert Morris. And it only gets better from here.
On The Big Dance field of battle, upset performances also abounded. Ken Chapple, Beanie 28, Brad Ford and Dennis Pitts all went 14-2 on Day One, but they and everyone else trail Big Dance veteran Brian Potash who, despite a mediocre 11-5 record, rode 35 upset points into 1st place. In our RECORD FIELD of 246, 4 selected #14 Ohio U over Georgetown and 119 had #13 Murray State over Vandy, including the aforesaid Potash who nailed both. The theme through the first day of competition seems to be that the major conference powerhouses may be over-rated, and apparently no conference more than the Big East. It does appear that we may have been duped here on the East Coast, having been fed a steady diet of Big East teams beating up on one another throughout the regular season, we thought they all were pretty good. Oops.
Special Kudos to Master Schirk, who managed a 6-10 record through the first day of competition (but is firmly in the middle of the pack in 134th as a result of a few upset picks). In total, 12 Dancers managed to pick NO upsets in the upset-laden Thursday, including Evan Brown, TJ Jetnil and Ken Wirth who added to their glorious start by selecting more losers than winners – dumping them in a 3-way tie for 244th.
